Opentype Features

Opentype Features

The new version 8 now supports many Opentype features, such as real small caps, real superscript numerals, versal forms, or historical alternates. Activate the desired features in the Font Properties dialog on the Opentype tab. However, it depends on which features the active font provides.

Glyphen

The best way to see the Opentype features present in a font is to use the Glyphs palette in the new Show drop-down list. Here, you can filter the glyphs displayed in the palette by the individual Opentype features. Only those Opentype features that are present in the font are available for selection in the drop-down list.

Ligaturen und stilistische Varianten

Ligatures

One of the most important Opentype features are ligatures. Select the Ligatures checkbox on the Opentype tab in the Font Properties dialog. Strings such as fi and ff are then automatically replaced in the text by the corresponding ligature.

Stylistic variations

Opentype fonts can also contain stylistic variants. Select the appropriate checkboxes on the Opentype tab in the Font Properties dialog. To find out which stylistic variants a font contains, use the Glyphs palette.

Create paths from text outlines

With the new version 8 it is now possible to create paths from text outlines. The conversion can be done with the Selection tool as well as in text mode. You can create paths from text outlines and remove the text (“convert”), or copy the paths to the clipboard and retain the text. An image can then be loaded into the Bézier shape created in this way, for example, or a color gradient can be set instead of a background color.

With the Selection tool

  • Convert: Click a single text frame with the Selection tool and choose Edit > Create Outlines from the main menu. The entire text of the text frame will be converted to a Bézier shape and the text will be removed
  • Copy: Click a single text frame with the Selection tool and choose Edit > Copy as Outlines from the main menu. The entire text of the text frame is placed on the clipboard as a Bézier shape. Use the Paste to Mouse Position function in the page context menu to paste the resulting Bézier shape anywhere on the page. The text in the text frame is retained.

The Create Outlines and Copy as Outlines functions are available in the Selection tool only for single text frames. They cannot be applied to multiple frames or concatenations.

In Text mode

  • Convert: Select text with the Text Content tool and choose Edit > Create Outlines from the main menu. The selected characters are then converted into a Bézier shape. They run along in the text as inline frames.
  • Copy: Select one or more characters with the Text Content tool and choose Edit > Copy as Outlines from the main menu. The selected characters are placed on the clipboard as a Bézier shape. Using the Paste to Mouse Position function in the page context menu, you can paste the resulting Bézier shape anywhere on the page. The text in the text frame is retained.

Setting fonts bold and italic

In the Format menu, you will find two new menu items:

  • Format > Attributes > Bold sets a bold font style for the selected text. If no text is selected, the active word will be set in a bold font face. If you execute Format > Attributes > Bold again, a normal font face will be selected. The function can also be executed by pressing the keyboard shortcut [Ctrl] [Alt] B.
  • Format > Attributes > Italic sets an italic font style for the selected text. If no text is selected, the active word will be set in an italic font face. If you execute Format > Attributes > Italic again, a normal font face will be selected. The function can also be executed by pressing the keyboard shortcut [Ctrl] [Alt] I.

  • View > Zoom > Zoom out will zoom out of your page for better overview. The function can also be executed by pressing the keyboard shortcut [Ctrl] Minus.

You can set the increment in the View section of the Preferences dialog.

Improved typesetting

In the course of the extension of the Opentype functions, we have also revised the typesetting engine. Please note that from version 8 onwards, the text is wrapped slightly differently than before. You should therefore check the text flow when transferring layouts from version 7 and adjust them if necessary.
